Encounters: Lula’s People with Alex Hochuli

This is the first in a two-part interview with the Brazilian political analyst and writer Alex Hochuli about the elections in Brazil and their aftermath.

We discuss the rise and morphology of Lula da Silva, from working class syndicalist to defender of the Brazilian state from its own worst excesses, and look at the class tensions threatening to cleave the nation’s young democracy apart.

In the second part for our interview for subscribers, we examine the limitations of ‘Pink Tide 2.0’, how the far right governs without governing, and why anti-fascism misunderstands the problem of modern political reaction.
